In Hills like White Elephants’ the couple is just starting out in life. The girl repeats that she would go in for the operation if that made him and them happy. She says, ‘and you think then we’ll be all right and be happy’. She again says, ‘and if I do it you’ll be happy and things will be like they were and you’ll love me?’ She wants to keep the child but he does not. She agrees to abort the child because she fears losing his love in case she does not. According to the report findings love is not possessiveness; love is to allow space with faith and confidence. In Hills like White Elephants he expresses possessiveness for her when he says, ‘I don’t want anybody but you’. He may be loving her but at the same time he is unable to understand that she wants to keep the child. He says, ‘I don’t want you to do it if you don’t want to. I’m perfectly willing to go through it if it means anything to you’. Such words make the reader feel that he has not been able to understand her feelings at all. He has been able to understand that it does mean a lot to her. She has been repeating that she would go in for it for the sake of happiness. So either he does not understand or chooses to ignore because he wants her exclusively. This amounts to selfishness and possessiveness. Is it merely lack of communication or is it lack of love? Love is neither selfish nor possessive. Love knows to give and not to take.
